NISKAYUNA — The public is invited to two free presentations at the Kelly Adirondack Center.
The documentary “Harnessing Nature: Building the Great Sacandaga” will be screened with filmmakers Lauren Roberts and Jason Kemper at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 30. It is the story of how the people of the Sacandaga Valley had to sacrifice their homes, their farms and their livelihoods for the greater good. It is a story of heartbreak, rebirth and a remarkable engineering project in its own right, creating the largest manmade body of water in the state.
“150th Anniversary of Adventures in the Wilderness; or, Camp-Life in the Adirondacks” will begin at 7 p.m. Jan. 31. In 1869 William H.H. Murray published a book containing a series of articles on the merits of camping in the wilderness of the Adirondacks. His combination of practical advice and fantastic stories would encourage thousands of urbanites to seek both rest and adventure in the Adirondacks. The success of this book led to others and a lecture tour that reached tens of thousands of attendees over five years.
This event will include an exhibit and lecture by Murray’s great great grandson, Randall Beach. The exhibit includes paintings, prints, glass slides, and drawings of Murray’s.
