CLIFTON PARK — A sex offender who was arrested earlier this month after police said he tried to send sexually explicit photos to a 14-year-old boy is now facing new charges in Saratoga County.
Gary J. Ryan, 47, of 1639 Route 9, Apt. 9, was charged this week with one count of first-degree course of sexual conduct against a child, a felony.
The new charge was brought after complaints surfaced about alleged incidents between March 2004 and January 2008, Sheriff Michael Zurlo said. The victim named in those complaints was younger than 13 at the time, officials said.
The new charge could put Ryan away for up to 25 years, if he is convicted.
Ryan is listed on the state sex offender registry as a Level 1 offender, the lowest level, for incidents that happened in 2008 that were investigated by state police and the Nassau County Police Department, Colonie police have said.
During the same period outlined in the new accusations — 2004 to 2008 — Ryan was affiliated with several not-for-profit and youth sporting organizations in the Mechanicville and surrounding area, Zurlo said.
Zurlo did not say if Ryan knew the victim in the newly filed case through one of those organizations, but Zurlo said it is important that anyone who who feels they may have had inappropriate contact with Ryan contact sheriff’s Inv. Kevin M. Herrick at 518-885-2406.
Ryan was arrested earlier this month by Colonie police on charges he tried to send sexually explicit photos to someone he thought was 14, police said. He was charged with three counts of attempted dissemination of indecent material to a minor, a felony.
Ryan, on three occasions in December and January, messaged undercover investigators who were posing as the underage boy, police said.
Investigators searched Ryan’s residence and seized computers for examination.
Investigators believe Ryan made other attempts to contact children locally, and that he also traveled out of state recently in an unsuccessful attempt to meet an underage person.
