Indoor track athletes shine at Utica meet

UTICA — The Niskayuna girls’ indoor track and field team’s 4×400-meter relay team set a meet and school record with its first-place finish at the Jan. 25 Utica Invitational.

Marissa Wise, Zoe Harris, Alexa Smith and Kristina Koes combined for a 4:03.11 mark in the victory.

Also recording a first-place finish and setting a meet record at the event for Niskayuna was its 4×200-meter relay team of Harris, Wise, Koes and Kaleigh West.

Grace Minkin set a school record in the triple jump with a mark of 35-9 in a fourth-place finish, while Liyat Kebbede set a new school freshman record in the 1,500-meter run at 4:50.66 and finished third.

Also posting a third-place finish was Koes in the long jump at 17-3.5.

Hoop teams compete in MLK tournaments

NISKAYUNA — Niskayuna boys’ basketball travel basketball teams recently competed in Martin Luther King Jr. tournaments.

In its games, the seventh-grade team posted a last-minute comeback to beat Saratoga Springs 45-44, handed Albany its first loss in three seasons with a 60-40 victory, topped Bethlehem 60-50 and fell in the championship game 60-52 vs. Schenectady.

Against Saratoga Springs, Gavin Olsen led the way with 16 points and 11 rebounds, Kasper Matia added 12 points and 11 rebounds, Ryan Spain had 10 points.

In the win against Albany, Matia had 25 points and 16 rebounds, Olsen combined nine points, seven rebounds and five assists, Rocco Foti had seven points and eight rebounds, Nick Thomas added six points and five rebounds, and Parker Aikens had nine points.

In the win against Bethlehem, Matia had 14 points and 11 rebounds, Olsen had 13 points and five rebounds, Spain and Jordan Ronan each had nine points, and Thomas added seven points.

In the championship game, Matia had 18 points and 17 rebounds and Olsen had 15 points and seven rebounds.

Niskayuna’s sixth-grade team won 43-38 against East Greenbush before falling 50-44 against Clifton Park. Against East Green-bush, Brady Olsen had a dozen points and Daniel Smalls had 10. In the loss, Smalls had 18 points and Olsen had 10.

The fifth-graders lost 39-28 to East Green-bush and 38-33 to South Colonie. Cameron Grasso had eight points against East Green-bush and 10 against South Colonie, while Charles Gadsden had 11 against South Colonie.

In fourth-grade games, Will DiCaprio had five points and Nate Fischer had four in a 37-17 loss against Albany, while Joseph Lagace had 10 and Alec Ingemie had seven in a 33-27 defeat against North Colonie.

Girls softball registration underway

NISKAYUNA — Register now for 2019 Niskayuna Girls Softball League.

Girls in kindergarten through eighth-grade living in Niskayuna and Schenectady are invited to join the Niskayuna Girls Softball League. The 2019 recreational season runs from April 29 to June 15. All practices and games are held at the River Road Park softball fields.

The cost is $85 per player, which includes team shirt and end-of-season celebration; there is a $10 discount for siblings. There will be a kickoff clinic Saturday, April 13, at Niskayuna High School.

Grades K-1 (6U): Mondays 6 p.m. and Saturdays 9 a.m.

Grades 6-8 (15U): Thursdays 6 p.m. and Saturdays 11 a.m.

Schenectady JCC teams win pair on hardwood

NISKAYUNA — In games played Jan. 26, two Schenectady JCC boys’ basketball squads registered wins.

In the Junior team’s 45-17 win against St. Kateri White, Dylan Mennillo led the way with a dozen points.

In the Biddy team’s 40-38 overtime victory vs. SMI, Duncan Munro scored a team-high 14 points.

Niskayuna boys top Schalmont

NISKAYUNA — Niskayuna boys’ travel basketball teams swept five games from Schalmont in Jan. 27 action.

In the eighth-grade game, Sam Booth had a team-high 16 points in a 59-42 win. Brooks Brennan and Dylan Mennillo each added 14 points.

Kasper Matia had 14 points and 11 rebounds in the seventh-graders’ 50-42 victory. Gavin Olsen added 10 points and eight rebounds, while Nick Thomas had five points.

In a 67-7 win for the sixth-grade team, Garrett Gillooley led the way with a dozen points, while Elliot Nish had nine and Martin Ryan scored seven.

Braden Fields had 10 points in the fifth-grade team’s 60-16 win. Charles Gadsden and Cameron Grasso each added nine points.

Alec Ingemie and Raymond Bowman each scored 11 points in the fourth-grade squad’s 35-19 victory.

Also, in a game against Burnt Hills, the Niskayuna third-grade team fell 30-11. Joey DiPiazza and Billy Roemer each scored four points.
