SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Springs Public Safety Commissioner Peter Martin announced Monday he will not run for a second two-year term this fall.
“I would like to pursue opportunities outside of my role as Commissioner of Public Safety,” Martin said in a prepared statement. “During this past year, I have treated the time and energy commitment of this position as a full-time job. I believe that it would not be fair to the people of Saratoga Springs to treat it as anything less.”
Martin was elected to a two-year term in 2017, following fellow Democrat Chris Mathiesen’s decision not to seek re-election.
The commissioner’s position is considered part-time and pays $14,500 annually. That is unlikely to change anytime soon, given rejections by voters – in each of the past two elections – of proposals to change the city’s form of government. The commissioner of public safety oversees the police, fire and code enforcement departments.
“As I said, this job is a full-time position, and I intend to remain a full-time commissioner for the rest of this year,” Martin said in the prepared statement.
Martin, an attorney, is a former Saratoga County supervisor representing Saratoga Springs on the county Board of Supervisors.
