WATCH THESE GUYS

A handful of swimmers are seeded No. 1 in multiple individual events. The group includes Joey Chiarella of Bethlehem (200 freestyle, 100 butterfly), Jackson Homan of Shenendehowa (200 individual medley, 100 breaststoke) and Bryan Liu of Niskayuna (50 free, 100 backstroke) in Division 1, and Bryce Henkel of Albany Academy (200 free, 500 free)) and David Walton of Queensbury (200 IM, 100 back) in Division 2.

Niskayuna is No. 1 in both the 200 free relay and 200 medley relay, and has a Division 1 high with six No. 1 seeds. Queensbury is No. 1 in both the 200 free relay and 400 free relay, and has a Division 2-leading six No. 1 seeds.

RECORD BID

The best hope for a Section II record could come from Niskayuna in the 200 free relay. Shaker holds the mark of 1:26.47 set in the 2016 season, and Niskayuna’s is seeded No. 1 with a 1:27.95 recorded by Bryan Liu, Victor Schingo, Mark Lipkin and Scott Ward at the Dec. 15 Shenendehowa Invitational. With Neil Horne joining Liu, Lipkin and Ward last year, Niskayuna won the Section II title in 1:27.11, and the same group went 1:26.70 to place fourth at the state meet.

DIVING STREAK

There is guaranteed to be a new Division 1 diving champion with the 2018 graduation of Nick Lydon, but will the title stay with Shenendehowa? Plainsmen divers have won the last six titles, with Adam Bonk taking first in 2013, and Ian Killane placing first in 2014 ahead of Lydon, who went on to claim the next four as well as a state championship his senior year.

Matt Chao of Niskayuna has the top diving score coming in (347.15) followed by the Shenendehowa tandem of Erik Herrero (316.05) and Yan Zheng Foon (286.75).

TEAMS TO WATCH

Shenendehowa went 11-0 in dual meets, and also placed first at the Invitational in the Glen just days after handing Niskayuna (7-1) its only loss by a 95-91 score. Niskayuna won each of its other duals by double figures. Bethlehem (9-2) lost only to Shenendehowa and Niskayuna. Albany Academy’s 10-0 dual record includes wins over D1 teams Guilderland/Voorheesville and Mohonasen/Schalmont. Queeensbury’s 8-2 dual mark includes a win over D1 Shaker and setbacks against Shenendehowa and Saratoga Springs.

A LOOK BACK

Shenendehowa displayed its depth last year when it won only one swimming event, the meet-closing 400 free relay, but came away with its second straight Division 1 team championship and 10th in 12 years. . . . Neil Horne of Niskayuna was named the large-school outstanding competitor after winning the 100 fly and 100 back, and starting off a triumphant 200 free relay. . . . Liam Picozzi of Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake was Division 2 outstanding competitor with wins in the 100 free and 100 back, and contributing legs on first-place 200 medley and 400 free relays. . . . Bryce Henkel of Albany Academy won the 200 IM and 500 free, and was part of a first-place 200 free relay. . . . Queensbury was the D2 team champion for the first time since 2015.
