Madison VanDenburg of Cohoes, a 16-year-old high school student, has made a big impression on “American Idol.”

VanDenburg performed Dan and Shay’s “Speechless” for judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan this weekend on Episode 3 of “American Idol 2019” on ABC. After her performance, the judges gave her a standing ovation.

“Do you know what you just did? You rendered us speechless,” said Richie, “to the point where Katy is showing me goosebumps on her arm.”

Said Perry, “I thought there was a winner [of the competition] earlier today. There might be a winner now. I think you’re as good as Kelly Clarkson. You could be the next Kelly Clarkson. You’re a massive star.”

“I’m witnessing the next Kelly Clarkson,” added Bryan.

In unison, the judges confirmed she had advanced to the next round by saying, “You’re going to Hollywood!”

Before her audition, VanDenburg spoke to the judges. “I’ve been in music my whole life. I started piano lessons real young,” she said. “I gig a lot, and [being on “Idol”] has been my dream.”
