Feds: Saratoga Springs, Ravena men sentenced in child pornography case

ALBANY – Two men, one from Saratoga Springs, have been sentenced to nine years in prison each in a federal child pornography case, U.S. Attorney’s officials said.

Derek Boprey, 32, of Ravena, and Benjamin Varieur, 34, of Saratoga Springs, each also received 30 years of supervision to start at the conclusion of their sentences, officials said. Boprey was sentenced Friday, Varieur in January.

Varieur, formerly of Brunswick, admitted in September to using the Wickr Me messaging application, between March 22 and March 25, 2018, to receive child pornography over the internet from another man, prosecutors said.

Varieur requested and received dozens of images of child pornography, including images depicting the sexual abuse of children as young as 2 years old, according to the press release.

Boprey pleaded guilty earlier and admitted he used the messaging application on March 23, 2018 to distribute child pornography to Varieur, prosecutors said.

The case was investigated by the FBI and its Child Exploitation Task Force, which includes members of federal, state and local law enforcement agencies, including the Colonie Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Michael Barnett prosecuted.
