Adults, children escape Wednesday morning fire in Schenectady

SCHENECTADY – A Wednesday morning fire heavily damaged an apartment home on Georgetta Dix Plaza and spread to a neighboring building.

Flames shot from the second-floor of the building at 351 Georgetta Dix Place, on the corner of Georgetta Dix and Westover Place.

A woman and five children were inside the second-floor apartment at the time the fire broke out, the woman, Crystal Nolan said at the scene.

Nolan said she saw sparks on a plug upstairs. She evacuated the children while her friend stayed upstairs to try and put the fire out. The friend, Nhazeem Boghasian, soon evacuated, too.

“I saw it exploding everywhere,” Nolan said at the scene of the sparks, soot on her face.

Boghasian described the fire as starting in a plug between two couches.

“I was trying to make sure everyone was safe,” Boghasian said.

The children were being housed across the street as they awaited further assistance.

The fire spread to the neighboring building. Nolan described that building as vacant.

In all, nine people lived in the building, Schenectady Fire Chief Ray Senecal said. He believed no one was on the ground floor.

Firefighters continued to battle the blaze at 9:30 a.m. The Red Cross was on the scene.
