Here are some cool numbers from the opening weeks of the Section II springs sports season.

Varsity wins for La Salle baseball coach Jesse Braverman after his Cadets used a late rally to beat Lansingburgh 14-8 in a Colonial Council game. Braverman became the 30th area coach to reach the milestone, and added to his extensive resume that includes two Section II titles with La Salle, another with Bethlehem and a trio of Empire State Games gold medals with the Adirondack team.

Points accumulated by the Niskayuna girls’ track and field team when it placed first at the NY/PA Invitational at Windsor High School. Corning was a distant second with 85 points. Senior Kristina Koes won the 400 dash and long jump, and helped the Silver Warriors prevail in the 1,600 relay. Senior Charlotte Kokernak, junior Zoe Harris, sophomore Marissa Wise and freshman Liyat Kebbede were each two-event champions.

Varsity lacrosse coaching wins for Shawn Hennessey, the most in Shaker’s storied history, after his Blue Bison topped Averill Park 15-0 in a boys’ Suburban Council game. Hennessey has led the Shaker varsity since 2007, and guided his alma mater to a Section II championship in 2017. He moved past his predecessor, Joe Bennett, on the program win list.

Goals scored by reigning Section II Class A boys’ lacrosse champion Niskayuna in its first three games, in wins over Albany (21-1), Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake (18-5) and Shenendehowa. (14-2) Junior Finn McCullough totaled 13 goals in the three games, and seniors Drew Collins and Gabe Nish both notched eight.

Strikeouts recorded by Mechanicville senior Jake Popiel when he hurled a no-hitter in an 8-0 Wasaren League baseball win over Waterford-Halfmoon. Popiel fanned 10 in his second start, and gave up an unearned run in five-plus innings, in a 2-1 victory over Hoosic Valley.

Goals scored by Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake eighth-grader MK Lescault in a 27-0 Suburban Council girls’ lacrosse win over Albany. Lescault also collected three assists. Her eight goals and 11 points both tied school one-game records first set by Nicole Beardsley (8-3-11) in a 2014 win against Shenendehowa.

Combined wins accumulated by sophomore Madison Relyea of Mayfield and senior Angel Sanchez of Amsterdam when they garnered athlete of the meet honors at the Ken Smith Bi-County Invitational at Knox Field. Relyea won the 800 and 1,500 and anchored the Panthers’ first-place 3,200 relay. Sanchez won the 200 and long jump and started the Rams toward a victory in the 400 relay.

Goals scored by Ballston Spa junior Maddy Barnum when the Scotties beat reigning Section II Class D lacrosse champion Schuylerville 16-7 in a non-league game for their first win of the season. Barnum, an attack player, generated four goals in an earlier 7-6 loss to Columbia.

Runs scored on Mohonasen senior Emma Rafferty’s go-ahead home run during a non-league softball win against Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake. Rafferty’s big hit was part of a Mohonasen rally that saw the team come back to win 8-7 after trailing 6-0 in the fifth inning.

Base runners allowed by Ichabod Crane sophomore Isabella Milazzo when she hurled a five-inning perfect game in the Riders’ season-starting 20-0 softball win against Holy Names. Milazzo struck out 12 — including the first six batters she faced — in what was the 300th victory for two-time state championship-winning coach Tracy Nytransky.
