Ben Anderson (Shenendehowa) has been a model of consistency for the Binghamton University baseball team this season, pitching at least six innings in each of his last five games, and averaging 8.4 strikeouts per game. The junior already has 57 strikeouts, highlighted by a 10-strikeout performance against Maine on March 24.
Last season, Anderson held opposing hitters to a .186 average and struck out 24 against 10 walks in 15 games, highlighted by tossing five shutout innings of one-hit ball against Siena on May 8 that helped him improve his ERA from 3.94 as a freshman to 1.60 as a sophomore. In three seasons, Anderson has held opponents to a .210 batting average while striking out 49 and allowing just 18 extra base hits.
Anderson did his best work at the end of his sophomore season, when he allowed four earned runs over his final 32 2/3 innings, equating to a 1.10 ERA.
As a high school senior, Anderson went 5-1 with 37 strikeouts and helped lead Shenendehowa to a victory in the New York State Class AA Championship, en route to being drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays. In addition to his pitching, he was also a catcher for Shenendehowa, and earned first-team all state honors at the position while being named to the school’s honor roll.
Anderson’s brother, Ian, is pitching in the Atlanta Braves organization for Mississippi of the Class AA Southern League.
- John Prendergast (Niskayuna), a four-year letterwinner, has 15 goals and two assists in 57 career games on the Duke University men’s lacrosse team.
Last season, Prendergast scored three goals in 20 games and was a perfect 8-for-8 in shots on goal for the Blue Devils.
- Stephen Rehfuss (Shaker), a junior attacker for the Syracuse men’s lacrosse team, has nine goals and 10 assists this season.
Last season, Rehfuss started 14 of 15 games for the Orange, while scoring a team-leading 48 points, including over 50% of his points in the fourth quarter or overtime.
- Marisa DiVietro (Niskayuna), a junior on the University of North Carolina women’s lacrosse team, has one goal and two assists this year.
Last season, DiVietro had 11 goals and six assists for North Carolina and saw action in all 21 games. She scored a career-high two goals and one assist against High Point, Florida and Northwestern last season, while gathering a career-best six ground balls against Maryland.
- Jill Shippee (Shenendehowa), a sophomore on the North Carolina women’s track and field team, recently broke her own record at the Battle of the Blues on April 6.
Shippee, who set the UNC women’s hammer throw record with a mark of 220-1 (67.09 meters), had set the record just one week earlier with a mark of 212-1 (64.65 meters). Her mark of 220-1 (67.09 meters) is best in the ACC, second in the East Region, and fourth in the NCAA. Overall, this marks the fourth time Shippee has broken the UNC women’s hammer throw record.
- Devon Willis (Schalmont), a graduate student on the University at Albany men’s track and field team, placed fourth in the men’s 60 hurdles finals, part of the 2019 America East Indoor Championships on Feb. 23, finishing in 8.51 seconds.
In the long jump, Willis jumped 6.95 meters, good for fifth place, while capturing second place in the triple jump with 15.33 meters.
- Tommy Miller (Maple Hill), a senior on the Siena baseball team, has registered three wins this year, and has a 4.63 ERA.
In seven games, all starts, Miller has 50 strikeouts, already the second-most of his college career, and threw a complete game on April 6 against Fairfield. Miller recorded six strikeouts on March 29 against Rider, bringing his career total to 228, the most in the history of Siena’s baseball program.
- Calista Phippen (Ichabod Crane), a freshman at Marist, was named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Pitcher and Rookie of the Week, the second consecutive week she has earned both honors.
Last week, Phippen went 2-0 while posting a 0.50 ERA in both of her appearances, and struck out 12 in 14 innings. Phippen has tossed two complete games already this season, and is 6-0 with a 1.42 ERA and 49 strikeouts in 44.1 innings. Opposing batters have hit .214 against her.
