Siena baseball coach Rossi wins 900th career game

LOUDONVILLE — Siena College head baseball coach Tony Rossi, a Schenectady native, registered his 900th career win when Siena split a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader with Quinnipiac Friday, winning the first game 3-2 before dropping the second game 4-3.

Rossi, 75, is the longest tenured head coach in NCAA Division I baseball history and the second-longest active tenured college baseball coach at any level. Now in his 50th season, he is third all-time in NCAA baseball history in seasons coached. He has the most coaching victories for any sport in both Siena College and Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference history in any sport.

Rossi’s career record is now 900-1106-8. He has 840 Division I triumphs.

Nicknamed “Skip,” Rossi is a member of the Siena Athletics Hall of Fame, the Albany Twilight League Hall of Fame and the Capital Region Baseball Hall of Fame.

Rossi graduated from Colonie High School and Brockport State.

Rossi has guided the Saints to five MAAC tournament championships, and Siena has competed in 10 MAAC Championship series. Three of Rossi’s former players competed in the Major Leagues: Gary Holle, Tim Christman and John Lannan. Thirty-three of his players have signed contracts with MLB organizations.
