Albany Academy senior guard August Mahoney has been selected the boys’ basketball Class A Player of the Year by the New York State Sportswriters Association.
Albany Academy swingman Andre Jackson was named to the all-state first team by the NYSSWA. Mahoney and Jackson led the Cadets’ drive to the New York Federation Tournament of Champions title.
Mahoney averaged 24.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.0 steals for the Cadets, who won 14 of their final 15 games for a 19-3 finish. The 6-foot-4 Saratoga Springs resident and Yale University commit shot 47% from 3-point range, going 97 of 205 on the season.
He nailed eight 3s and totaled 24 points when Academy beat Frederick Douglas Academy 75-49 for the Federation title and was named the tournament’s most valuable player.
Mahoney is the second Section II player in as many weeks to earn a top player award from the NYSSWA. Glens Falls senior Joseph Girard III was named the state’s top Class B player for the second time.
Mahoney was named to the all-state first team after his junior season when the Cadets were the Federation runner-up. The Cadets have won three Federation crowns in four years.
Jackson averaged 17.4 points, 10 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 2.0 steals and 2.0 blocks. The prolific 6-foot-7 dunker, a Federation tournament all-star, shot 70 percent from the field.
In Class AA, Long Island Lutheran junior Andre Curbelo and Cardinal Hayes senior Joe Toussaint shared the Player of the Year award.
