JOHNSTOWN — Charging documents in the first-degree rape case against former YMCA employee Tyler Benton indicate he is accused of having sexual intercourse with 12-year-old girl inside the “family locker room” at the YMCA’s 213 Harrison St. building.

Benton, 19, a resident of Johnstown, was arrested by Fulton County sheriff’s deputies and charged with first-degree rape of a person under the age of 13.

The Fulton County YMCA’s family locker room includes a sign indicating both male and females can use the room, but also a warning that the locker room is only for parents assisting opposite gender children with changing.

The felony complaint against Benton does not include an allegation of forcible rape or physical coercion, but the charge is first-degree rape because of the alleged victim’s age.

Benton’s employment with the YMCA was terminated when the complaint of the alleged rape was brought to the attention of YMCA officials.

Fulton County YMCA Director Steven Serge stated in a released statement that Benton was a part-time employee with the YMCA since 2017.

“When he was hired he underwent our comprehensive employment processes which include a New York State Central Registry background check as well as him agreeing to and signing the YMCA Code of Conduct which details behavioral standards all Y employees must follow,” Serge said. “When learning about what may have occurred, the YMCA self-initiated contact with the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office.”

Benton was arraigned in Broadalbin Court, but his next court hearing will be in Johnstown Town Court in June.
