Numbers of note: Niskayuna, Scotia athletes shine

Section II athletes put together a number of strong efforts this past week. Here is a look at 10 of the best.

Matches won by the Queensbury boys’ tennis team since its inaugural season in 1960 after it defeated Glens Falls twice to conclude its Foothills Council schedule. Those victories left Queensbury with an all-time record of 601-242 (league, non-league, postseason) heading into this week’s Section II team tournament.

Seconds it took for Amsterdam girls’ track and field star Lauren Santiago to win the 200-meter dash when the senior broke her own school record at the Queensbury Invitational. Santiago also broke her school 400 record while winning in 57.22. Both her times rank in the top-20 on the all-time Section II leaderboard.

Seconds remaining in the second half when Ballston Spa girls’ lacrosse player Jordyn Ostrander scored to give the Scotties an 11-10 Suburban Council win at Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake. Ostrander’s tally capped a three-goal run and lifted Ballston Spa to its seventh straight win, and to its all-time program-best 12th regular season victory.

Strikeouts recorded by Mayfield sophomore Jillian Botch when she authored her second varsity no-hitter in a 6-0 Western Athletic Conference win against Schoharie. The double-threat softball all-star had two hits in the game, and is batting over .600 with three home runs.

Races won by Saratoga Rowing Association athletes at the New York State Scholastic Championships at Fish Creek. The host team posted wins in the men’s varsity pair, varsity double petit, varsity double, lightweight quad, junior quad, junior double and varsity four, and in the women’s freshman eight, 2v eight, junior eight and under-17 quad.

Points amassed by freshman Brock Behrman when the unbeaten Niskayuna boys’ lacrosse team topped Columbia 17-7 in a Suburban Council game. The attackman assisted seven times and scored three goals to boost his season point total to 64 (26-38), which is a Niskayuna varsity record for ninth-graders. Behrman’s seven assists and 10 points also set freshman varsity records.

Goals scored by Guilderland senior attacker Amanda Nieman in a 13-6 Suburban Council girls’ lacrosse win over Averill Park. The Siena College commit also had a seven-goal game in a win over Shaker, and scored six goals in three other contests.

Events won by Scotia-Glenville boys’ track and field standout Josh Jeffes, including the 400-meter dash in a school-record 50.85, at the Fonda-Fultonville Invitational. The junior also won the 100 (11.62), 200 (24.07) and long jump (20-7) while helping the Tartans secure the team championship. Scotia also earned the girls’ team title behind two-event winners Sage Luke, Stephanie James and Zoe Connor.

No-hitters pitched by members of the Mechanicville baseball team this season after Jacob LaFountain, Jacob Popiel, Devin Garland and Ryan Grimmick joined to shut down Stillwater 11-1 in a Wasaren League game. LaFountain pitched into the fifth inning and struck out eight before Mechanicville’s relievers finished up. Popiel went the distance and fanned 13 last month when he no-hit Waterford-Halfmoon in an 8-0 win.

State track and field leaderboard position for two-time Section II girls’ tennis champion Loren Cuomo of Mohonasen after she clocked a 5:51.15 in the 1,500-meter steeplechase at The Futures meet at Mohonasen. Cuomo was about five seconds off the national-leading time of 5:46.08 run by seventh-grader Bethany Simpson of Bourbon County, Ky., last month.
