SCHENECTADY – A patient at Ellis Hospital assaulted an emergency room technician last week, authorities said.

The employee suffered pain and swelling to her hand, and it’s possible she will suffer further damage, police said.

Tiffany Potter, 28, of Glenwood Boulevard, now faces one count of second-degree assault, a felony. The felony is due to the victim being an on-duty hospital employee.

Potter is accused of grabbing the emergency room technician’s hand and fingers the afternoon of May 10 and bending them backward violently, “causing a ‘crack’ to occur,” according to police allegations filed in court.

The victim required medical treatment, including a splint and a cast-like wrap on her arm, police wrote. The victim will also require follow-up treatment to check for fractures and ligament damage.

The incident follows another from earlier this year where a patient was accused of injuring a nurse at Ellis. In that case, a woman was accused of struggling with the nurse, injuring the nurse’s ring finger.
