SCHENECTADY — A city man was convicted this week in an October assault on a woman where he repeatedly punched her and stabbed her with a screwdriver, Schenectady County district attorney’s officials said.
Warren Jones, 27, was convicted in a non-jury trial of second-degree assault and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, felonies.
The judge found Jones attacked a 51-year-old woman Oct. 24 on Albany Street as she sat on a stoop outside a store, prosecutors said.
He punched her nearly a dozen times in the head, then left and returned with the screwdriver, prosecutors said. He repeatedly stabbed her in the head with the screwdriver, causing superficial wounds, prosecutors said.
Jones ultimately left the area. Police arrested him about an hour later.
Prosecutors believed the attack had roots in a fight between the victim and another woman earlier, prosecutor Stephanie Hughes said. Jones knew the other person in the fight.
Prosecutors used street surveillance footage to show the timeline and that the fight had ended prior to Jones attacking, Hughes said.
“We are grateful for the cooperation of the victim in this case, without whose testimony we would not have been able to hold Mr. Jones accountable for his cruel and premeditated attack on her,” Schenectady County District Attorney Robert Carney said in a press release. “It is not easy to come forward and face someone who has done you harm, but because of her willingness to do so, and the hard work of ADA Hughes, we were able to bring him to justice.”
Prosecutors also thanked the Schenectady Police Department for its through investigation and the state police for their help.
Jones faces up to seven years in state prison on the assault conviction at his July 26 sentencing.
