SCHENECTADY – Firefighters battled a blaze Friday morning at a house in Schenectady’s Mont Pleasant neighborhood.
One occupant at the scene indicated a discarded cigarette may have sparked the blaze.
Firefighters were called to 1270 Webster St., near the corner of Ninth Avenue, at around 10 a.m.
They arrived to find heavy fire in the attic and they put the fire out in about 20 minutes, Fire Chief Raymond Senecal said.

All eight occupants were out of the two-family building ahead of firefighters’ arrival, he said. Five were present when firefighters arrived.
There were also several animals in the building, he said.

“The building owner and the occupants were concerned about their pets,” Senecal said. “We were able to bring out several cats, and we were able to bring out several rabbits.”
Residents could be seen outside with their pets, at least one dog and one cat.
Resident Sabrina Chambers said her boyfriend was smoking a cigarette just before the blaze started and dumped it.
”He thought it was out,” Chambers said.
Senecal said their investigation into the cause is ongoing, but all early information points to an accidental start.
