SARATOGA SPRINGS — An Albany man has been arrested in connection with an assault last month in Saratoga Springs, police said.

Police credited the arrest to the public’s help in identifying the man from surveillance images released.

Diego Torres, 25, was arrested Thursday morning on one count of second-degree assault, a felony, police said.

He is accused of punching a 40-year-old man in the head on Maple Avenue, just off of Caroline Street, at about 2:30 a.m. May 12, police said.

The victim suffered facial fractures that will require ongoing treatment, police said.

“The assault was an isolated occurrence and both parties were strangers to each other,” police said in a release.

Police later identified surveillance images of the suspect and released them to the media May 29. Within 16 hours, police had numerous tips identifying Torres as the suspect.

After further investigation, police made the arrest.

“We would like to share our thanks to those who shared the photos and the ones who provided tips,” police said in the release.

Police also had hoped to identify a woman in the photos released. Police have since identified her, as well, but no charges are expected against her.

Torres was arraigned and released on $10,000 bond.

The May 12 assault followed one from 10 days earlier that left a Schenectady man in critical condition. That assault happened on Church Street, near Broadway. No arrests have been made in that case
