Following multiple sightings of a black bear in town Saturday morning, Rotterdam police located the animal in a tree in the rear yard of 1325 Lawn Ave.

The bear was tranquilized and after several minutes came down from the tree and was safely captured.

An animal biologist on the scene said the bear is a female believed to be over 20 years old and weighing approximately 175 pounds.

The bear is doing well and will be monitored by the state Department of Environmental Conservation over the next 24 hours.

Rotterdam police had the help of the state police, the DEC and Rotterdam firefighters.

In Schenectady, a bear was spotted between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. in the Woodlawn neighborhood, police said.
It’s not known if it was the same bear.

Police spokesman Sgt. Matthew Dearing said the bear was last seen near the Woodlawn Preserve. Police did not locate the animal.
