Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake High School won the Class A combined boys’ and girls’ title, and placed second overall to Fairport, in the 11th annual New York State Sportswriters Association Kerr Cup All-Sport Championship.
Burnt Hills scored 49.67 points in eight different sports — four boys and four girls — while Class AA Fairport of Section V totaled 50.5 points in five sports to claim its first overall championship in the program for New York State Public High School Athletic Association schools.
Schools are awarded points based on results from state meets and tournaments, on a 15-10-8-6-4-3-2-1 basis. Burnt Hills was led by its boys’ cross country team that won its third consecutive state title in the fall. The Burnt Hills boys’ volleyball team placed second in the state, and the school’s football and girls’ volleyball teams made state semifinal appearances.
Burnt Hills won overall Kerr Cup championships in 2009, 2010 and 2012 and shared the top spot with Cazenovia in 2011, and has been in the top 10 in all but one of the competition’s 11 years. Shenendehowa won three overall Kerr Cup titles from 2015-17.
This year’s race for the overall championship was the closest in Kerr Cup history, with the top 11 schools finishing within nine points of each other. Pittsford Mendon was third with 48.75 points followed by Cornwall 48.5 and Fayetteville-Manlius with 47.5.
This year’s competition saw Glens Falls place third in the Class B combined scoring, and first in the Class B boys’ scoring, with 30 points generated from its state football and boys’ basketball titles. Whitehall tied for fourth in the Class D combined scoring, and tied for first in the Class D boys’ scoring, with 15 points from its state title-winning baseball team.
Burnt Hills won the Class A boys’ title with 32.67 points and Queensbury was fourth with 19.67, and Shenendehowa was fourth in the Class AA boys’ group with 22.33 points. Shenendehowa’s baseball team recently placed second in the state.
Cambridge, Stillwater and Greenwich tied for fourth in the girls’ Class C scoring with 15 points based on their state championships in basketball, soccer and cross country, respectively. Fort Ann tied for fifth in the girls’ Class D scoring with 10 points.
