SARATOGA SPRINGS — A man found unconscious June 20 at Saratoga Spa State Park and initially believed to be an assault victim has died. His injuries were accidental, police said.

Walter Kelly, 69, of Saratoga Springs, died Thursday evening at Albany Medical Center. An autopsy determined that his injuries were due to a fall rather than an assault, said state police spokeswoman Trooper Kerra Burns.

“It was accidental. There was no criminal element,” Burns said.

Kelly was found in a Saratoga Spa State Park parking lot the evening of June 20 with life-threatening injuries. He had suffered severe injuries to his head and body, and was initially believed to be an assault victim. He was found in the west Route 50 parking lot near the Saratoga Performing Arts Center.

State Park Police initially handled the investigation, but later turned it over to the state police.
