SCHENECTADY — A series of community forums on the future of the state canal system will start this month.

The Rockefeller Institute of Government is holding the meetings in support of Reimagine the Canals, a state-sponsored initiative to identify new uses for the Erie Canal.

The series will start July 11, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Van Curler Room at SUNY Schenectady County Community College. Subsequent meetings will be farther up the canal, in Utica, Syracuse, Brockport and Lockport.

The insights from these sessions will be presented to the Reimagine the Canals Task Force, which will incorporate the voices of canal communities into its effort to evaluate the canal as a resource for agricultural irrigation, ecological restoration, flood mitigation, boating, fishing and tourism.
