MALTA — A Saratoga Springs man was killed and a Niskayuna woman seriously injured Sunday in a two-vehicle crash, state police said.

The crash also injured a Ballston Spa man and a man from Valley Falls, state police said.

The crash happened on Route 9 south of Malta Avenue in Malta at about 3:40 p.m. when a car driven by Kelly A. Leonardi, 46, of Niskayuna, crossed into the southbound lanes for an unknown reason and struck a pickup truck head-on, state police said.

Leonardi was taken by helicopter to Albany Medical Center for critical injuries, state police said.

Her passenger, identified as John E. Stevens, 49, of Saratoga Springs, was killed in the crash, state police said.

Both the driver of the pickup truck, Michael P. Defile, 45, of Valley Falls, and his passenger, Mario V. Gonzalez, 60, of Ballston Spa, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were also taken to Albany Med.

The investigation into the crash continued Monday.

The crash had both directions of Route 9 shut down between Hearn Road and Callaghan Boulevard as state police investigated Sunday evening.
