SCHENECTADY – A tree fell and hit a moving SUV late Monday on Interstate 890 in Schenectady, trapping and injuring the driver.
The driver was taken to Ellis Hospital for treatment, according to information available at the scene. An update on his condition was unavailable Tuesday morning.
The incident happened just before 9 p.m. in the eastbound lanes, just west of Exit 7, as powerful storms rolled through Rotterdam and Schenectady.
The tree contacted the SUV toward the front of the vehicle, crumpling the hood and shattering the windshield. The damage also trapped the driver in the vehicle.
Monday night’s storms knocked down trees and power throughout the area. National Grid reported about 2,200 customers still without power across the region Tuesday morning. Many of those were estimated to have long waits for power to be restored, as long as 11 p.m. tonight.
