STILLWATER – Brown’s Beach on Saratoga Lake reopened on Wednesday, after town officials said new tests showed the beach water clear of bacteria that lead to a five-day closure.
The beach was closed Friday, after daily testing found high levels of e.coli, an indication of fecal contamination in the area. A taste on Tuesday showed the water is now clean.
The town blamed the problem mostly in geese that had taken up residence nearby. Measures the town took included a crew removing weeds on either side of the beach that can retain bird feces, and placing barriers that can keep geese from moving between the water and shore.
A similar situation closed the beach for a month in 2016. The beach was purchased by the town and opened to the public in 2015, after many years of being in private hands.
