A man who was suspected of burglarizing a home in Northampton took his own life in Mayfield after a brief standoff with police officers on Saturday.
According to police, at approximately 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office issued a “be on the lookout” alert for a black pickup truck that had been stolen from a home in Northampton. A burglary of that residence had been reported prior to the BOLO alert being issued, said police.
At 8 p.m., a New York State trooper located the vehicle in the parking lot of a Stewart’s Shop in Mayfield, along with the suspect, David Draffen, 47, of Northville. Draffen was recently placed on parole after he was released from a state prison facility.
Although deputies engaged with Draffen for a half-hour, said police, he ultimately took his own life with a shotgun.
The Mayfield Fire Department, Fulton County Emergency Services, and Fulton County Coroners assisted at the scene, said police.
