Police: 12-year-old stabbed 13-year-old over bike in Schenectady

The incident happened just after 5:30 p.m. Monday

SCHENECTADY — A 12-year-old stabbed a 13-year-old and took his bicycle Monday evening, Schenectady police said.

The victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment of an injury that a police spokesman described as minor.

The incident happened just after 5:30 p.m. in the area of Becker and James streets, police said. An initial call described a possible abduction attempt, police said, but arriving officers determined there was no such attempt and that the call centered on the stabbing.

Police believe the 12-year-old stabbed the 13-year-old in the back and then took the victim’s bike, police spokesman Sgt. Matthew Dearing said.

Police took the suspect into custody nearby and recovered the bike at the same time, Dearing said. Police did not identify the suspect due to age.

Detectives from the department’s Youth Aid Bureau investigated and turned the case over to Family Court, Dearing said.
