GREENFIELD — Roads were closed in the north Greenfield and Porter Corners area Thursday evening as state police and other law enforcement personnel responded to reports of a potentially suicidal male with a handgun in the woods.

State police were leading the search and investigation but the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Department had officers and its drone unit on hand to assist at 5 p.m., according to Sheriff Michael Zurlo.

He said they were responding to reports that a male carrying a gun ran into the woods off of Route 9N about three or four miles north of Greenfield Center.

School buses leaving Greenfield Elementary School were delayed Thursday after school, according to a post on the Saratoga Springs School District’s Facebook page. The buses were eventually let go after state police indicated it was safe for them to do so, but students who live in the area of the search were held at the school as their families were contacted directly.

Route 9N northbound was closed at Porter Corners Road near the railroad bridge as of 5:20 p.m. A helicopter could also be seen over the area.
