COLONIE – A Schenectady man stopped for speeding early Sunday was found to be drunk and illegally possess a handgun, police said.

Earl J. Pittman, 39, of Dewitt Street, was arrested just after 2 a.m. on Central Avenue and charged with multiple felonies, police said.

Police stopped Pittman near Lombard Street after clocking him going 57 mph in a 40 mph zone, police said.

Pittman then failed several field sobriety tests and was charged with driving while intoxicated as a felony and first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation, a felony, police said.

A search of his vehicle then uncovered a loaded Smith and Wesson 9mm handgun, which Pittman was not legally allowed to possess due to prior felony convictions, police said.

The handgun was not reported stolen and its origins are being investigated, police said.

Related to the gun, Pittman faces one count each of second- and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, felonies.
