Despite playing with a cast on his broken left wrist, running back Peyton Ausfeld rushed for 127 yards and scored two touchdowns Sunday, and he made a key defensive play late in the game in helping Amsterdam to a 35-28 Class A Capital Division high school football victory over Columbia.
Ausfeld scored his first touchdown on a 42-yard run in the second quarter, giving the Rugged Rams a 14-6 halftime lead.
In the fourth quarter, Ausfeld scored on a 57-yard run to snap a 28-28 tie. Then, as Columbia was driving for the tying touchdown, Ausfeld made a one-armed interception with 3:17 left to halt the Blue Devils’ final offensive drive.
Amsterdam quarterback Tommy Ziskin passed for 67 yards and two touchdowns and added 91 rushing yards.
In a non-league field hockey game, Shenendehowa beat Blair Academy 5-3. Julie Kuzmich led the Plainsmen with two goals.
