ALBANY — Meryl Tisch, who served on the Board of Regents for 20 years, including as chancellor of the state’s education system, on Wednesday was appointed chairwoman of the SUNY Board of Trustees.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo appointed Tisch as well as Carlos Perales as vice chairman of the board. Perales has served as the New York’s secretary of state and held various federal and state government positions.
“Dr. Tisch is one of the nation’s leading education experts and her decades of experience as a teacher and administrator combined with her deep commitment to New York students make her the perfect person to help guide SUNY into the future,” Cuomo said in a statement Wednesday.
Tisch stepped down from her tenure as chancellor during a contentious period in state education policy as teachers enraged by changes to the teacher evaluation system helped fuel the state’s massive testing opt-out movement.
