Paula Opel has been working at the Daily Gazette since 1975.

She started in the billing department and later moved over to the advertising department. Opel first transferred over to the executive offices in 1990, and in 2014 began in her current role as director of human resources, where she oversees employee recruitment, compensation, benefits and relations.

More from 125 Years of Gazette special anniversary edition:

Opel says her interactions with current and retired employees are part of what she enjoys most about her job. She’s also proud to play a crucial role in the newspaper, which remains an independent voice for the city of Schenectady and its surrounding communities.

While she has a number of memories from more than four decades of employment with The Gazette, it’s the many friendships she’s formed during her long tenure here, and the paper’s big move in 1990 from State Street to its present headquarters on Maxon Road Extension, that she remembers most.
