High schools: Mohonasen/Schalmont’s Conway, Bethlehem’s Sorbello get swimming wins

Senior swimmers Mary Kate Conway of Mohonasen/Schalmont and Sydney Sorbello of Bethlehem were Section II’s individual event winners at the Shenendehowa Invitational Saturday at Shenendehowa High School.

Conway prevailed in the 200 free (1:53.45), placed second in the 100 free, and also helped her team take second in the 200 free relay.

Sorbello won the 100 breaststroke (1:06.29), and joined with Maggie Hartman, Megan Novak, Anna Bernasconi on a first-place 400 freestyle relay (3:34.35) that clipped the Mohonasen/Schalmont foursome of Marianna Santabarbara, Amanda Jurgelon, Amaya DiGiovanni and Conway (3:34.51).

Peyton Ausfeld ran for five touchdowns and a school-record 322 yards, and the Amsterdam football team improved to 3-1 with a 34-6 Class A win at Albany (0-4).
Griffin Woodell produced five touchdowns, two coming on punt returns and another on a fumble return, and Glens Falls (4-0) rolled to a 49-16 Class B football win over Hudson. Aidan Hirsch added two touchdowns for the state’s No. 1-ranked team and defending champion.

Calvin Schneider scored two of his three touchdowns in a 20-0, first-quarter burst, and Cambridge/Salem (4-0) defeated Hoosick Falls 55-12 in a Class C contest.

Chris Albrecht caught a touchdown pass, kicked a field goal and went 6-for-6 on PATs to help Greenwich (3-1) beat Hoosick Valley (0-4) 38-6 in another Class C tilt.

Section II had several team champions, including the Burnt Hills-Ballson Lake and Guilderland boys and the Shenendehowa girls, at the 55th McQuaid Invitational at Genesee Valley Park in Rochester.

The Burnt Hills boys won the Seeded Varsity AA race with 72 points, led by Ryan Allison’s third-place run (15:14.5) over the 3-mile course. Guilderland won the boys’ Seeded Varsity AAA race with 66 points, led by Sean O’Brien’s second-place effort (15:21.6).

Niskayuna had Tom Ragone (15:20.7), Julian Franjieh (15:50.8) and Daniel Malatesta (16:00.7) place first, third and fifth, respectively, and topped the boys’ Unseeded Varsity AAA-2 race with 73 points. Scotia-Glenville earned the boys’ Unseeded Varsity AA-2 title with 77 points, and Tartan Noah Greski placed third (16:08.0).

The Shenendehowa won the girls’ Seeded Varsity AAA event with 63 points, and was anchored by Jade Dennis in sixth (17:48.8) and Hannah Belleville in seventh (17:57.6). Niskayuna was third in that race with 104 points and Shaker was sixth with 159. Tori Mariano of Shaker finished fifth (17:38.9).

Faith DeMars of Ballston Spa (17:52.8) was the individual winner in the Varsity AA race, and Burnt Hills was second among the teams with 95 points. Mia Paolino of Burnt Hills took fourth (18:20.6).

Konstantin Friederich scored in the first overtime as the Galway boys’ soccer team edged Middleburgh 2-1 in a Western Athletic Conference game.

Brooke Pickett scored four goals to boost her season total to 27, Teya Staie added two goals and the Stillwater girls’ soccer team (9-0-1) beat Tamarac 8-1 in a Wasaren League game.

Claire Isaksen piled up 83 assists, and the Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake girls’ volleyball team beat Fairport, Baldwinsville and Victor in its final three matches to secure the Baldwinsville Tournament championship. Carlie Rzeszotarski had 39 kills and Callie Chevalier had 15 kills. Burnt Hills, the No. 1 Class A team in the state, defeated Victor, the No. 1 Class AA team in the state, 25-17 and 25-22 in the title match.

The Johnstown field hockey team got goals from seven different players in a 9-0 non-league win over Columbia.
