Colonie police: Schenectady man attempted to lure girl for sex

COLONIE — A Schenectady man has been arrested for allegedly trying to lure a 12-year-old girl for a sexual encounter, Colonie police said.

The man contacted a person online whom he believed to be a girl, but was actually an undercover investigator, police said. 

Police on Wednesday arrested Stephen J. Walling, 29, of Campbell Avenue, Schenectady, and charged him with first-degree attempted criminal sexual act and first-degree attempted dissemination of indecent material to a minor, felonies.

Police arrested him after a three-month investigation into his attempts online to meet a 12-year-old girl for sexual contact, police said.

Walling’s messages to the intended victim involved internet and text conversations of a sexual nature and his attempt to meet her for sex, police said.

The meeting was set up for Wednesday evening in the parking lot of a Troy-Schenectady Road business, police said. Walling traveled to the location and was arrested, police said. 

Digital media devices were seized from Walling and turned over to the state police for forensic examination, police said.

There are no known victims of Walling, police said, but they are asking anyone who believes they may have been a victim of Walling or has information is asked to contact Colonie police at 518-783-2744.
