TOWN OF FLORIDA – More than a dozen Shih Tzu dogs were seized from “horrendous” conditions at a home in the town of Florida Wednesday, an official with the Montgomery County SPCA said.

The dogs, 14 in all, were discovered at the home Wednesday by the town animal control officer, who then notified the SPCA, SPCA board President Jan Zumbolo said early Wednesday evening.

“The conditions of the house were horrendous,” Zumbolo said.

Feces and urine were all over, including on the dogs who also suffered with matted fur, she said. There five adult dogs and nine puppies, she said.

Both the state police and Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department were involved, Zumbolo said. A state police spokeswoman confirmed the investigation Wednesday evening, but said it remained open. No charges had been filed as of Wednesday evening, the spokeswoman said.

The owners relinquished ownership of the dogs to the SPCA, Zumbolo said, and the dogs are expected to be put up for adoption when they are ready.
