TROY — Hudson Valley Community College men’s basketball head coach Mike Long recorded his 500th career college head coaching win Saturday with a 103-93 overtime victory against Rockland Community College at McDonough Sports Complex.

A Menands native who now lives in Guilderland, Long’s college coaching career has included stops at several area schools. Long coached the junior varsity team at Siena College, his alma mater, for one season, then led Saint Rose’s program from 1973 to 1986. Later, after serving as an assistant coach for four seasons at the Junior College of Albany, Long became that program’s head coach 13 seasons. Following a return stint at Saint Rose as an assistant coach for several seasons, Long became Hudson Valley’s head coach in 2013.

Long won 10 games with his Siena team,166 at Saint Rose, 222 at Junior College of Albany — now known as Sage Colleges — and 102 at Hudson Valley.

In Saturday’s win, Shamar Moore-Hough scored 25 points, while Brandon McKenly had 18 points, 18 rebounds, seven blocks and four steals to lead Hudson Valley in 28 minutes. Ryan Long added 15 points. The teams were tied at 88 heading into overtime. 

Hudson Valley is 4-1 on the season and next plays 1 p.m. Sunday at SUNY Schenectady.
