SCHENECTADY — For the first time since 2006, the Union College football team is preparing for an NCAA tournament matchup.
This past weekend, Union defeated RPI 33-0 Saturday, then found out Sunday it will host Case Western Reserve next Saturday in a Division III national tournament first-round game. Kickoff is set for noon at Frank Bailey Field.
Here are 10 numbers to know from Union’s 10-0 start to the 2019 season.
Total seconds of game action this season in which Union has trailed. Union trailed St. Lawrence for 75 seconds in a 38-17 victory, trailed Rochester for 98 seconds in a 47-19 win and trailed Ithaca for 99 seconds in a 31-21 victory.
Percentage of games Jeff Behrman has won in his four seasons leading Union. The Dutchmen went 0-10 in the season prior to Behrman’s arrival and 3-7 in his first season at the helm. Union produced seven-win seasons in 2017 and 2018 before this year’s 10-0 start.
Touchdown passes this season for William Bellamy. The quarterback has completed 65.1% of his passes. On the season, Bellamy has passed for 1,940 yards with only three interceptions.
Team-leading touchdowns scored total for Ike Irabor. The sophomore has rushed for each of his touchdowns, and is averaging 121.4 rushing yards per game this season. As a freshman, Irabor rushed for 798 yards and 10 touchdowns, plus had two receiving touchdowns.
The program’s current winning streak. Union last suffered defeat in an Oct. 13, 2018 game at Ithaca. Union lost 24-0 in that game, while the Dutchmen defeated Ithaca 31-21 this season.
Points per game Union is allowing, which ranks the Dutchmen No. 8 in the country. Union has held five teams to seven or fewer points. Union’s lone shutout on the season came against rival RPI in a 33-0 win.
Wins total for Union, as well as the number of seasons in which the program has finished undefeated during a regular season. Before finishing the 2019 regular season without a loss, the program also accomplished that feat in 1914, 1939, 1949, 1985, 1986, 1989, 1991, 1993 and 2005.
Years since Union last won a Liberty League championship before this year’s title. The Dutchmen clinched at least a share of this year’s league crown when it defeated Ithaca, but Union ended up the league’s lone undefeated team. Hobart and Ithaca tied for second place, as each finished 4-2.
The team’s smallest winning margin this season. Union defeated Utica 13-7 earlier this month, and the Dutchmen won each of the rest of their games by at least 10 points.
Sacks recorded per game for Union. Leading the Dutchmen in sacks is Daniel Gioioso with eight, while Vincenzo DiCaterino — a senior who graduated from Broadalbin-Perth High School — has seven.
