PORTLAND, Ore. — With its young but fast collection of runners, Saratoga Springs prevailed in the girls’ 5,000-meter race Saturday at the Nike Cross Nationals at Glendoveer Golf Course.

Saratoga (competing as Kinetic XC) scored 78 points to beat out 21 other teams including 2018 national champion Central Oregon, which placed second Saturday with 160.

“We knew a mile in that they were winning, and they continued to move up after that,” Saratoga co-coach Linda Kranick said. “Being young kids, there were ups and downs at some meets this year, but they put it together and ran as if they’d been doing this their whole life.”

The race was held in the rain on a muddy course.

“Those conditions can affect even a veteran runner,” Kranick said. “They handled it very well.”

Sophomore Ella Kurto (17:58.3) placed 14th overall for the Blue Streaks and was sixth among the runners scoring for their teams. Kurto was followed by freshmen McKinley Wheeler (35, 9, 18:26.1), Mackenzie Hart (38, 11, 18:28.0) and Sheridan Wheeler (39, 12, 18:28.2), and eight-grader Emily Bush (82, 40, 19:09.5).

Sophomore Catherine Mongan (131, 83, 19:43.4) and eighth-grader Anya Belisle (162, 113, 20:10.6) completed the Saratoga lineup.

“Hart ran out of her shoes,” Kranick said. “She really put it together and had a great race.”

Saratoga made its 14th national appearance Saturday and won for the second time. Nicole Blood anchored the first team victory in 2004 and was on hand Saturday in a recruiting role for the University of Virginia. Saratoga had placed second four times, in 2005, 2009, 2010 and 2011, and was sixth last year.

“We are getting all kinds of texts and congratulations from former athletes,” said Kranick, who coaches the team along with her husband Art. “We are hearing from kids from all over the country. It’s really awesome.”

Saratoga had placed second last weekend at the Nike Cross New York Regional Championships, and before that won at the New York Federation meet, placed second at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association meet, and prevailed at the Section II meet.

“Very, very proud of them,” Linda Kranick said.

The girls’ race winner, North Rockland senior Katelyn Tuohy (17:18.4), became the first athlete to place first at the event three years in a row.

The Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake boys placed 18th with 407 points. Spartan sophomore Ryan Allison (15:52.2) finished 56th overall and 21st among the runners scoring for their teams.

Competing as an independent, La Salle sophomore Gitch Hayes (16:05.3) placed 80th.
