SCHENECTADY – Schenectady to a shout-out on Jeopardy! Tuesday night in an answer and question focusing on the city, or, more specifically, General Electric.

Schenectady and GE came up in the $1,000 clue in a category “Fun with zip codes” and centered on General Electric’s special sequential zip code, 12345.

The answer: “The zip code 12345 in Schenectady, New York lights up this company that began operations there in 1892.”

The question, as kind of revealed higher up: What is General Electric?

But anyone reading this likely would have already known that.

One of the players, however, David, did not. He was close, however, signaling he may not have completely understood the clue.

His question: What is Edison?

Reigning champion Karen then rang in with the correct question What is General Electric.

“That’s the company,” host Alex Trebek responded.

While General Electric’s zip code is interesting in and of itself, the number also makes it interesting in another way: The 12345 zip code is one children often use to send letters to Santa.

It’s honor GE workers take seriously as volunteers spend their lunch hours each December to brighten Christmas for hundreds of children simply by responding to their letters to Santa.
