The Cotton Factory Hollow Bridge that spans I-890 will be temporarily closed for repairs.
The reason is to repair an expansion joint, said Mayor Gary McCarthy on Monday.
The bridge was temporarily shuttered by the Schenectady Police Department earlier this month after a police officer noticed a problem with an expansion joint.
Work is expected to take between a week and nine days, McCarthy said, and workers were on-site Monday morning.
The mayor said he couldn’t immediately provide dates for when the bridge will be closed nor a cost estimate for the repairs.
The Cotton Factory Hollow Bridge crosses I-890 and connects Hulett Street in Hamilton Hill to Francis Avenue in Mont Pleasant, and is a main thoroughfare to the new Boys & Girls Club, which formally opened on Monday.
City employees previously attempted to install steel plates to reinforce the joint.
The city has been awarded $3 million by the state to reconstruct the bridge, but the plan is still in the design phase.
McCarthy estimated work to replace the deck surface will begin in 2021.
The mayor previously said the joint never presented a public safety risk because it did not affect the stability of the structure.
