The Shenendehowa girls’ basketball team used stingy defense and a second-half surge to pull away and defeat Our Lady of Lourdes 70-40 in a non-league game at Shenendehowa on Sunday.
After leading by eight at the half, Shenendehowa started the third quarter the exact same way it ended, with a 3-pointer by shooting guard and team captain Meghan Huerter, who scored 19 points, as did Rylee Carpenter, to lead Shenendehowa.
“Different things worked for us at different times,” Shenendehowa head coach Joseph Murphy said. “Our press worked for a little bit. We hit some shots against the zone. Our zone offense worked really well at times to get the ball high-low. We did a good job with our transition offense.”
After a back-and-forth first half that saw the Lady Plainsmen jump out to a 27-19 lead, a Huerter 3-pointer, one of five she made in the game, to start the third quarter ignited the offense. Shenendehowa outscored Our Lady of Lourdes 43-21 the rest of the way, while only surrendering seven points in the fourth quarter.
“Our press and moving the ball really worked well for us today, which helped with finding the open player and spot in our offense,” Huerter said. “Our chemistry and how deep we are helps. We all play well together and want each other to do well. We don’t care what one person’s accolades are, we just want everyone to play their best game to get a team win. I just love team basketball.”
Kaitlyn Watrobski added 10 points to cap off a complete offensive and defensive team victory for Shenendehowa, the No. 3-ranked Class AA team in the state.
“We definitely played great team basketball today,” Carpenter said. “We are so deep and can pretty much put anyone in, and they will step up. I think it’s great that we have so many players that have so many different skills that they can bring to this team, which really brings it together, so when you add that with great team chemistry, it makes us a great team and tough to beat.”
Our Lady of Lourdes is ranked No. 11 in Class AA, so Shenendehowa knew it would take a complete team effort to get the victory.
“We knew Lourdes was a great team and that we really had to step up because of how successful they are,” Carpenter said.
Also at Shenendehowa, Hope Sullivan scored 21 points, and Hailey Ballard and Abby Doin scored 14 each as Queensbury defeated Bishop Kearney of Section V 63-49.
Shenendehowa will play Bishop Kearney on Monday.
