COLONIE – The man killed in a Sunday shooting at the Days Inn on Central Avenue died of an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said Sunday.

Police identified the man who died as Denzel Grimes, 29. He had been a resident of the motel since mid-March, police said.

Police determined Grimes accidentally shot himself in the groin area just after noon Sunday as he was in room 337 of the Days Inn, 1606 Central Ave., police said.

Police were called to the Days Inn at 12:13 p.m. for a report of a man shot. Responding officers found the man with a gunshot wound, police said. Officers rendered first aid until Colonie EMS arrived, but the man died shortly afterward, police said.

Police recovered the gun, a Jennings/Bryco Arms Model 59 9mm, and determined it to be illegally possessed. Its origins remained under investigation.

“This case is closed and no charges are expected in regards to this case,” police said in a release.
