Shane O’Dell received a second-team selection Thursday when the New York State Sportswriters Association unveiled its 2019-20 small-school boys’ basketball all-state teams.
In his senior season, O’Dell averaged 27.9 points and 17 rebounds per game in leading Schalmont to a Section II Class B championship. The Sabres’ season was cut short because of the COVID-19 pandemic, as Schalmont was reading to play in the state quarterfinals when its season was halted.
Also from Section II earning a second-team selection at the Class B, C or D levels was North Warren junior Anthony Girard, who averaged 25 points per game in leading his team to a Class D area championship.
Besides O’Dell in Class B, Watervliet senior J.J. Chestnut received a seventh-team selection; Catskill senior Lavon Fernandez earned a 10th-team spot; Fonda-Fultonville senior Jackson Atty was an 11th-team pick; Cohoes freshman Royal Brown was a 13th-team selection; Hoosick Falls senior Jon Kempf made the 14th team; Hudson senior Dayquan Griffin earned a spot on the 15th team; Catskill senior Devon Haye was a 16th-team selection; and, each of Glens Falls senior David Barclay, Broadalbin-Perth senior Dante Calderone, Glens Falls senior Nick Danahy, Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons senior Noah Foster, Mechanicville senior Josh Germain, Glens Falls junior Noah Girard, Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons junior Rodney Parker, Bishop Maginn junior Ja’Nyve Smith and Hoosick Falls senior Tristan Williams were honorable mentions.
In Class C, Voorheesville sophomore Zaveon Little was a fourth-team selection; Hadley-Luzerne senior Danny McMahon was a fifth-team pick; Lake George junior Luke Pelchar earned a spot on the fifth team; Berne-Knox-Westerlo junior Zeke Pulliam was a sixth-team selection; Granville senior Jarett Williams was a seventh-team pick; Schoharie senior Shane Helmstadt earned a ninth-team selection; and, honorable mentions went to Maple Hill senior Rian Jewett, Stillwater senior Brian McNeil and Waterford-Halfmoon senior Michael Talavera.
Besides Anthony Girard in Class D, Argyle senior Peyton Lufkin earned a third-team selection; North Warren junior Tanner Dunkley was a fifth-team pick; and, Germantown senior Bryan Bathrick and Hartford senior Gavon Darfler were honorable mentions.
