The New York State Public High School Athletic Association announced Monday in a press release that it had canceled this spring’s state championships because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Those events were set to be held from June 4-13, and included competition in track & field, boys’ tennis, softball, baseball, lacrosse and golf. Previously, the state needed to cancel state-level competition in basketball, hockey and bowling during the winter season because of the health crisis.

“Today’s decision is difficult for the membership of NYSPHSAA,” executive director Robert Zayas said in the organization’s press release. “We certainly sympathize with the students, coaches and their school communities, especially the graduating seniors.”

In a separate press release issued from Section II, it was announced Monday that the section won’t host championships this year. The section, though, left open the possibility some competitions could be held.

Spring seasons for athletes and teams were halted in mid-March, and remain that way through at least May 15.

Sections VIII and XI have canceled the entirety of their seasons..

This report will be updated.
