GLENVILLE – A Glenville man wanted in several Saratoga County store thefts and a burglary was arrested Sunday after a similar theft at another store, state police said.
Eugene F. Wachtel, 53, was arrested and cahrged with third-degree burglary, as well as three misdemeanor petit larceny counts related to the incidents.
State police tracked him down Sunday after a report of a theft at the Walmart on Old Glick Road in Saratoga. Troopers received information that a man had fled the store with stolen merchandise.
Troopers soon found the vehicle involved on Route 50 in Wilton. Troopers immediately recognized the driver, identified as Wachtel, as a suspect in multiple thefts from stores in Saratoga last month.
Wachtel had been wanted for taking merchandise from a Walmart, Target and a Hannaford, the highest amount being $523 in merchandise taken from the Walmart, troopers said.
The Hannaford theft also brought a burglary charge along with it as he had been previously told to stay out of the store, state police said.
In his car Sunday, state police found $450 in merchandise taken from the Walmart in Wilton and another $450 in merchandise taken from the Target there. Troopers also found him in possession of a small quantity of crack cocaine and drug paraphernalia.
Troopers initially spotted the drug paraphernalia in a cup holder of his vehicle as they first spoke to him, state police said. Troopers also soon determined that his license was revoked.
Wachtel also faces one count each of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, criminal use of drug paraphernalia, fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property and aggravated unlicensed operation, misdemeanors.
Wachtel was arraigned and released to appear in court later.
