St. Anthony’s Church in Schenectady has cancelled its annual June festa, due to coronavirus fears.

The announcement was posted on social media earlier Thursday.

“It is with great sadness that we announce our decision to cancel the 2020 festa in honor of our patron saint, St. Anthony,” the announcement read. “Several weeks ago, amid the current pandemic, we came to his decision after much consideration.”

The festa had been scheduled for June 5-7. Traditionally, hundreds of people gather outside the Seward Place church for music, games and Italian and Latin foods such as cavatelli with meatballs, stuffed shells, polenta, calzones, sausage and peppers, calamari, zeppoles, empanadas and Sister Maria’s baked goods.

For many, the festa has been one of the ways to begin the summer party season. The announcement also wished good health to all.

“We also pray for the many nurses, doctors, medical professionals and first responders tasked with the enormous responsibility to treat those affected with the coronavirus,” the note read.

Festa organizers promise the church party will return in 2021.
