WILTON — The Adirondack Northway in Saratoga County was closed down or restricted for hours Friday afternoon after a fatal tractor-trailer crash near Exit 16, state police said.

Trooper said that at 12:33 p.m. they responded to reports of a crash on the southbound side of the Northway just south of Exit 16, and found a tractor-trailer that was southbound had veered off the highway into the median, crashed, and burst into flames, and briefly starting a brush fire. “The driver ot the tractor-trailer is deceased, the identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin,” police said.

No other vehicles were involved, and there were no other injuries. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

The crash impacted travel in both directions, with northbound traffic — heavy due to the start of the long Memorial Day weekend — briefly halted entirely, and then moving with lane restrictions for about two hours, with motorists detoured onto the Exit 16 off and on ramps.

Southbound traffic was shut down for longer, and remained restricted to a single lane into late afternoon.

The northbound lanes were packed with people headed to Lake George or the Adirondacks for the long Memorial Day weekend.
