COLONIE – A fire spotted by a passer-by Thursday morning led police to a marijuana grow operation inside the building and to the arrest of a Schenectady man, police said.

The incident began just after 8 a.m. at 2895 Curry Road, police said. A passing motorist reported the fire, which responding firefighters quickly extinguished, police said.

While inside, though, firefighters spotted the marijuana grow operation, police said.

Police got a search warrant and subsequently found 162 pounds of marijuana inside and evidence to implicate Jason R. Teagle, 42, of Schenectady, in the operation, police said.

The fire itself was investigated by the Colonie Fire Services Division and determined to have been caused accidentally by an electrical issue related to the grow operation, police said.

Teagle turned himself in to investigators Tuesday night and charged with one count of first-degree criminal possession of marijuana, a felony. He was arraigned and released to return to court later.
