
BALLSTON LAKE – A Ballston Lake man in Colorado for the weekend with his wife died in a rafting accident in Durango, police there said.
Patrick Southworth, 61, was on a guided rafting trip in Durango with his wife, another couple and a guide Sunday morning when the the raft they were in overturned in large rapids on the Animas River there, Durango Police Commander Ray Shupe told The Daily Gazette Monday by phone.
Southworth’s wife Patti and the other three on board made it to shore, but Patrick did not, Shupe said. Witnesses said Patrick, wearing his life jacket, continued motionless in the water, possibly knocked unconscious in the fall, Shupe said.

The guide and another person got Patrick Southworth to shore as another person called 911. Rescuers performed CPR, but he passed away, Shupe said. An autopsy was scheduled.
The couple had been in Durango for the weekend from Arizona, where they had been working, Shupe said.
Patti Southworth formerly served as Town of Ballston supervisor.
