Just about every track will now be racing on their normal night, but with no spectators.
Albany-Saratoga Speedway opened on Friday, while Fonda Speedway will also be racing Saturday and Sunday. Saturday will see the Swagger Factory Apparel 602 crate sportsman and Algonkin Motel pro stocks in competition. Practice will be available for all other divisions. Pit gate opens at 3 p.m., hot laps at 6 and racing at 7.
Sunday, Fonda will see the Sunoco modifieds, Montgomery County Office for the Aging limited sportsman, Roberts Towing street stocks, and the 4 cylinder cruisers, will race. Pit gate opens at 3 p.m., hot laps at 6 and racing at 6:30.
Glen Ridge Motorsports Park will swing into action Sunday with all weekly divisions. DIRTcar 602 crate modifieds, DIRTcar pro stocks, limited sportsman, street stocks, mini stocks, and sling shots. Pit gate opens at 3 p.m., hot laps at 5:30 and racing at 6.
Utica-Rome Speedway is racing Sunday DIRTcar sportsman, DIRTcar pro stocks and rookie sportsman will hold feature events. Open practice will be available for all other divisions. Pit gate opens at 4 p.m., and racing is at 6.
Devil’s Bowl will be racing on Monday. Racing begins at 7 p.m. Crate modifieds will race 29 laps for $1,200. Limited sportsman, super stocks, mini stocks, and mini sprints will all compete in COVID-19 lap features.
The Fulton County Antique Car Club will hold Cruise-In at Cappie’s Drive-In on Route 67 E on Tuesday. The planned hours are 5 to 8 p.m. If more dates are added, I will pass them along.
Outlaw Speedway, which is west of here near Dundee, held its opening point season last Friday. Modified feature winner Alan Johnson added another victory to his long career. Rounding out the top five were Matt Sheppard, Danny Johnson, Erick Rudolph and Justin Wright. For Johnson, this was his 46th year in a row of earning a modified feature win during his career.
Can-Am Speedway near Watertown also opened up for 2020 last Friday. In the 358 modifieds, Mike Maresca scored the win over Tim Sears Jr., Billy Dunn, Lance Willix and Tim Fuller. In the sportsman, it was Addison Bowman in for the win over Robert Delmormier, Dave Richer, Joe Williams and Anthony Rasmussen. Sis Harmer took the pro stock feature a head of Nick Stone, Josh Coonradt, Burton Ward and Scott Towsley.
Penn Can Speedway held its 51-lap tribute to Mike Colstien last Friday. Joey Grammes took the win, followed by Jeff Strunk, Brett Tonkin, David Schilling and Alex Tonkin.
Stewart Friesen was busy last Saturday. Friesen started the day off at the Atlanta Motor Speedway, where he finished 10th in the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series race. Then, after a quick flight to Middletown to the Orange County Fair Speedway, he scored the victory in the 43-lap $4,300 to win Jimmy Horton Tribute race for big block modifieds. Rounding out the top five were Matt Sheppard, Andy Bachetti, Kenny Tremont Jr. and Billy VanInwegan. Jack Lehner finished seventh.
Heat race winners were Mike Mahaney, Dillon Syeuer, Jimmy Horton, Matt Sheppard and Tremont Jr.
Land Of Legends Raceway also raced last Saturday. Modified heat winners were Tim Fuller, Pat Ward and Larry Wight. Ward took the feature victory over Dillon Groover, Alan Johnson, Justinn Haers and Kyle Coffey.
Center Ilse’s Thunder Mountain Speedway opened last Saturday. David Schilling, driving his 1-800-Got Junk No. 20, took the big block feature. In the 358 modifieds, it was Corey Cormier winning over Adam Pierson and Ronnie Davis III.
Luck just seems to follow certain people. Area drivers Friesen and Tim Hartman Jr. were at Potomac Speedway in Maryland last Sunday, for the Short Track Super Series Battle at Budd’s Creek. Stewart was there for the modifieds, and Hartman Jr. for the sportsman division. Both drivers pulled the No. 1 spot out of the hat during the redarw for starting position for their respective feature.
Friesen led during the early stages of the feature until Sheppard took over the final half. Finishing in the top five were Billy Pauch Jr., Mike Gular and Larry Wight. Hartman Jr. scored the sportsman win over Scott Hitchens and Jim Housworth.
Tuesday, LOLR held a 40-lap modified feature that saw Wight score his first Canandaigua victory. Rounding out the top five were Sheppard, Friesen, Johnson and Peter Britten.
